Can anyone tell me the difference between the OptiVisor and just using the "cheater" magnifying glasses that are sold at the drug store?

What a difference!

I put off buying one of these for years because I thought that I was doing fine with high powered glasses, but this is a game changer. I use this for soldering silver jewelry as well as making seed bead jewelry. This Optivisor makes it so much easier to do both. I even used it to pull a splinter last week. I bought the #4 with 2X power and it seems to be the one I need for my hobbies.

A MUST HAVE for precision work.

I don't care how good your vision is, these things are GREAT for doing precision work. Wish I got them 25 years ago. They're plenty comfortable and the lenses can be replaced or swapped out for different magnification lenses. If you poke around on Amazon a little, you'll find a 3 pack of a different brand of replacement lenses that have pretty good reviews for a fraction of the cost of 1 Donegan brand lens. It's likely one of them will be the same mag as what's on the model OptiVISOR you chose. They're a little odd when you first put them on out of the package. You'll likely feel like your field of vision is uncomfortably restricted, which it is, and that's likely due to the fact you have used binoculars in the past to magnify distant things. Most binocs have a wide field of view. Just use these for 3 seconds and you'll realize you don't need a wide field of vision at all because you're working with small parts or doing some sort of other precision work and looking at a relatively small area of whatever you're working on. It's hard to explain. But when you actually use them for the first time you'll love them.

Quality made in USA

These magnifiers by Donegan Optical are the best…. I have tried some of the other Chinese knock offs and they don’t work right are uncomfortable and are poorly made…… spend a little more and get this brand….we have some these in our work lab that are 20 years old and are still in good shape….

Kinda funny looking, but...

Okay, I'll admit it. I have a big head. And in order for this product to work correctly, you have to strap it to your head. Fortunately, if is adjustable from very small to very large head sizes. Mine works perfectly at the biggest size. This visor can flip up or down, so that you can see objects very close (about 2X) or, when flipped up, normal size. The flipping mechanism works well, and it allows me to look at my work carefully when needed. The downside? Well, it looks kind of funny when you're wearing it. I usually work alone in my workshop, so its no big deal. My wife has gotten used to seeing me wearing it. Seems like they could come up with something a bit more fashionable, but until then, this visor works fine.

Wonderful!

I bought one of these at an opticians 5 or 6 years ago and my wife and I love it. Cost some 40% more than from this Amazon seller. Wish I'd bought one decades ago. Provides great hands free closeup magnification for all kinds of things: wife's work with miniatures, delicate glue or solder jobs, removing a splinter, maintenance on fountain pens; the uses are endless. This one I bought as a birthday gift for my brother and I know he will love it. Well made, MADE IN THE USA! I've known of people using one of these for over 20 years. I have also bought the LED light kit for this as well, both for our Optivisor and to go with the Optivisor I will give my brother: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058ECQ46/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This light is well made, excellent instructions, also MADE IN THE USA!, and is just fantastic when you need shadow free perfect illumination. You'll never know how much you have needed hands free magnification until you try this.

Made working much easier!

When building my model ships, this visor has made a huge impact on seeing small items and placing pieces with glues and painting. Really nice adjustments for fitting to the head firmly. Lenses are very clear with no scratches or distortions.

They don't make them like they used to

I've been using OptiVisors for over 20 years, and I do remember when they were a quality product. The visor is secured to the adjustable head band by two plastic nuts on either side on the band. Unfortunately, one of those two nuts was defective and frequently fell out, causing the visor to slip down and hit my nose. I finally went to the local hardware store and found a couple of plastic pieces, which are now keeping it in place. The lenses, which are a very high quality, are held in place with plastic pins with a knob on the end.) The plastic didn't held the lens in place, so I did replace the plastic dowels with a couple of small nuts and bolts. Now the OptiVisor functions perfectly.Do I recommend this product? Yes. The quality of the lens is superb. If you buy it and have the problems with it that I have, know you can get the fix-it parts at your local hardware store.
