Eerie, uncanny and disquieting.

This eccentric collection of dystopian speculative fiction stories encompasses the myriad anxieties that accompany modern womanhood—from having a baby to attending a dinner party to caring for a sick relative. The characters in Phillips’ stories range from suburban moms to futuristic prostitutes, and the eerie, uncanny worlds that she creates are disquieting in their existential familiarity. As with most short story collections, there were some that were much better than others (I particularly enjoyed the first several stories), but each was engaging and succinct enough to capture my full attention. I read the full collection in one sitting. Recommended for fans of Margaret Atwood and Black Mirror.

Not my favorite style

One good story and a lot of mediocrity following it. This is a highly "stylistic" writer, and if you don't like her style, it's not a pleasure to read. This is a matter of personal taste. For me, just meh.

Great!

I loved this book! I'm usually not a fan of short stories, but this book changed all that. Some were strange. Some were hysterically humorous. Some were social comments. I was unfamiliar with Helen Phillips' writing before. Now I am a huge fan! It's not a long book, but oh so wonderful!

I kept wishing these springboards of creativity had better craftsmanship behind them

An anthology of short stories that were not as developed as the title suggests. It included some solid storylines taken as far as possible but overall disappointing in execution. I kept wishing these springboards of creativity had better craftsmanship behind them. I'm waiting for the rewrite.

Five Stars

I mean, it's Helen Phillips.

I like how the floor falls away from a seemingly normal story and takes you into wonderland

My wife read this to me... She kind of reminds me of Jonathan Carroll.

Brillaint and creep at the same time

Brilliant story lines. Reminded me of Atwood of Oates. Suspenseful, sad, funny at times.
