Great Dac and Amp combo
Like for $170 this device sounds great. Some people talk about specs and measurements and go on and on.The most important audio advice: does it sound good to YOU!This does for me.

AKM 4497 DAC
I like this DAC as a pure DAC. It sounds great. It is not as "bright" as an ESS board (D10, KTB) and it isn't quite warm as a Burr Brown (iFi Zen DAC). For a cheap AKM DAC, I'd probably go with an E30 or a Sanskrit 10th MK2. However, those were unavailable so I thought I'd give this a try. If I were to judge this on purely sound, I'd give it max stars. As it is a clean sound (despite ASR measurements) especially with a firmware update that was released to address the "noise" issues. However, since there are other use cases for this DAC, I don't think I can give it max stars as it may not be what you are looking for.Feature-wise, you get a AKM 4497 DAC chip with filters, etc, but you only get one, so you don't get balanced out.The colors may not be your style and unfortunately because it doesn't have balanced out, you won't be able to actually use it with the Loxjie P20 for fully balanced usage. I don't care for the headphone out and wish they dropped the amp portion and focused on the DAC, as the P20 exists. It also operates at a temperature that is warm to touch. I had it above my amp, and I am a little concerned about the temperature. So for all compromises and the features of this unit, I gave this 4 stars. I like the DAC that this has and it is strictly what I use it for, and it does its job. If you need the other features, it may not be for you.

Except for the headphone amp, I like it...but its measures well below its specs.
I have owned the D20 for several months and overall am pleased with it. However, compared to similarly priced DACs like the SMSL SU-8, and Topping D50 and DX3 Pro, some of its key performance stats measure poorly, well below its published specs. One of my main reasons for buying it was its use of the top of the line AK4497 DAC chipset....which should perform great. That is what would justify its high price compared to DACS with similar features. In use, I like it. The digital volume control is particularly nice, giving you lots of control. The remote is I think better than the one that comes with the SU-8 (although not every button on the remote has a function). It looks very nice and feels solid.But. Audio Science Review recently put the D20 through a thorough suite of tests. Please Google ASR & Loxjie D20 to see the report (as well as tests of similarly priced DACs). In most cases the test results were significantly worse than Loxjie's published specs. In particular, it shows a S/N ratio of only 83 dB (the published spec is a really excellent 112dB). 83dB can mean audible noise. Also, the headphone output impedance measures a very high 21 ohms....this will cause issues with any medium or low impedance headphones. So, I think it sounds fine on my system desktop system except when using headphones. But the premium price (compared to a Topping DX3 Pro or SMSL Sanskrit 10th) is not justified given its below average performance. If Loxjie can point me to other tests that justify their published specs, I would be interested.

Nice colorful dac (Red)
Give yourself a treat ... have a listen ... the headphone amp is not really not that bad ... somewhat underpowered but very clean .... Not too much bass and the highs are just right. You will not find another AK4497 at this price.

A very clean dac in a very pretty box. The reason for 4 stars is the headphone amp / output in front is not up to snuff for the price. Remote has some quirks with buttons that don't work when they should. A great way to put powered monitors in your living room and have a remote. The SU8 however also does this with balanced options. Or a miniDSP HD. Don't think either one sounds better than this. So it is just another option for that usage.

Good quality sound and quality construction.
We use this DAC as a converter for the optical out from our TV and sending the audio signal to our power amp. The bass is clean but not overpowering and the highs are clean and smooth. The remote works pretty well but is generic, so some buttons don’t work. This makes the operation a bit less intuitive but still do-able. I would buy this item again if I had to. It’s good quality and the build is good quality. I have not used the headphone function.
