excellent narrative

I am not qualified to review the book. I can just say that I am enjoying reading it, it is a magnificent combination of charming narrative and historical detailing. The paper quality of the paperback edition is terrible and so I also bought the kindle edition.

Great readable history

Eugene Rogan presents the history of Arabs from the Ottoman rule (1600 A.D) to Present day (2011 A.D). Basically narrates the history of the Arabs (from Morocco to Persian Gulf), the occuppiers of their lands (Ottomans, British, French, Jewish settlers and US intervention) and of course their Despots, Tyrants and Monarchs.Lets face it middle-east is one of the most fascinating and tragic epicenter of the modern world. This book helps us understand their history through their eyes. The author does a commendable job.The Book, naturally, lacks focus at places as it covers 500years of history of a diverse people united by language. The books covers a vast timeline from the Ottomans, WW1, British & French Mandates of Arabia, so-called Post independence, Cold-war era, Post cold-war and Present day.Although a historian by profession, Rogan presents a limpid narrative of history. The Chapter on Oil was particularly interesting. Apparently, the megalomaniacal Colonel Gaddafi was the first Arab ruler to question the Oil Corporation on the then-accepted share 50-50% profit sharing (earlier it was 45-55%). He forever changed the Business of Oil.Ultimately there are successes and failures in their course of history. Rogan doesn’t portray the Arabs as Victims. He gives due credit for their successes and criticism for their failures. Failures are as result of Intransigent attitude towards Conflict resolving, Internal quarrelling and of course Foreign Intervention.
