I searched for decades after someone absconded (back to England) with the copy of this book that my mother gave me when I got married. (Shame, shame!) I was thrilled to find this edition, and to see that it had hardly been messed with at all. Also delighted to learn that the winsome Mary Berry was involved in this brilliant, meticulously explained, fully illustrated handbook on how to not poison your new husband, back when we were both a lot younger than we are today. This is the essence of the best of British "plain cooking."

This was given to me for Christmas by my mother in 1971 when I was newly married. I still use it's recipes today. The spine is weak now and the most used pages are spattered with ingredients but I still love it and continue to use it. The new copy is for my youngest son who is closer to forty than he would like and who remembers his favourite recipes too. I bought it for him because he is a great cook and will enjoy cooking down memory lane for his wife and son.

I've had this book so many years. My mother gifted it when I lived in France, providing me with simple 1 page recipes with color illustrations of every one. My daughter loved it, too, and copied recipes. I found it was still available online, bought it and gave it to her for her birthday last year.

Hard to review a cookbook that you once owned. It was in fairly good condition for being so old. I had lost my copy in a move so wanted to replace it. It's never quite the same as something you've owned for close to 30 yrs. I rated it 4**** because it was in better condition than I really expected it to be for the cost. Thanks.

OMG back to the true Basics!

Classic recipes of the year it came out! Used it back in the day continuously then gave it to a Charity Shop! Purchased it again to complete my Mary Berry collection of cookbooks. Good one!

Was looking forward to this and it did not disappoint!

I have the first edition of this book ,had it for over forty years ,so decided as it was in a poor state it was time to get a replacement for it .I’m delighted I was able to buy the same book again after so long .A really easy book to use and everything turns out as per the picture in the book .Mary Berry recipes always work out for me and she wrote this book ,what more can I say , if your an eager cook or a youngster just starting out this is the book for you .

Had this cookbook years ago and gave to my son then tried to get again and found on amazon, lovely around cookbook I have used many times the baking side of it is brilliant.Bought second hand great condition, came in a few days.

A wonderful cookbook that I had early on in my marriage. Having emigrated, so glad I found a second-hand copy.
