A Truly Talented Live Showcase From Mike Bloomfield And Al Kooper!

Indeed THE live adventures of Michael Bloomfield and Al Kooper. On the heels of their Super Session projects with Steve Stills, they venture further omitting Stills and being joined by bassist John Kahn and drummer Skip Prokop for extensive jamming/improvisation along same special guests-Paul Simon(backup vocals added in the studio for a slower soulful version of Simon & Garfunkel's Feelin' Groovy), Carlos Santana(guitar solo on Sonny Boy Williamson) and Elvin Bishop(Bloomfield's former bandmate of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band on guitar and lead vocal on No More Lonely Nights). The odd note behind these shows(A three night stand at Bill Graham's Fillmore West auditorium in San Francisco) is that Bloomfield, a slightly chronic insomniac, had several days without sleep as Kooper explained at the beginning disc 2. That explains on the third night why Bishop and Santana were on stage. Regardless, the solos on Booker T. Jones classic Green Onions by both Bloomfield and Kooper are surpassive. Also Bloomfield's vocals appear here for the first time-I Wonder Who, Mary Ann, That's All Right and Don't Your Love On Me So Strong. Kooper throws in a Hey Jude riff during the organ solo on Dear Mr.Fantasy before the lead mic konked out on the final verse yet the audience mic picked it up for the song's duration. Note the guitar dropping on the stage after the final note Bloomfield hit on the Finale:Refugee instrumental penned by Bloomfield and Kooper themselves. Also worth noting the jazz inclined bass solo by John Kahn on Her Modal Majesty[from Super Session]. For the two musicians present on Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited album as well as Dylan's going-electric-at Newport 1965 performance, they are backed by the greatest of talents at these memorable shows at Fillmore West back in 1968. A must have-truly.

A Must for Bloomfield Fans

I'm not sure why I waited so long but I finally picked up the CD reissue of this and listening to Bloomfield's opening speech is a happy/sad experience. Happy because you could hear MB's enthusiasm and that he wants to be upfront with the audience on what the show is all about but sad because you can hear the struggles he was going through in his voice. And, while it may not be his best playing, (I would say that was on the first two Butterfield albums), 40+ years later, it is still amazing. The tones he gets with the Les Paul and, I presume a Twin Reverb amp, are stunning. Sure, there a couple of mistakes but most players out there then, and now, don't approach the technical and emotional depth of Bloomfield's playing. And, while this is not Kooper's apex either, I would say "Child Is Father To the Man" as well as the best of the Blues Projects's tracks is his best, he put together a great session that includes some great reworks of some pop, rock and blues classics. On "59th Street Bridge Song" he takes Paul Simon's advice to "slow down, you're moving too fast" literally and the band lays down a great groove around Bloomfield's playing. "That's Alright" is also an excellent rearrangement. When Mike bows out from exhaustion, Koop gets Carlos Santana and Elvin Bishop to fill in...not too shabby! I've heard Steve Miller also filled in, and I'd like to hear what those tracks sound like but unfortunately they are not on these CDs.Overall, great playing by all but indisputably, Bloomfield is the stand out.

Buy It-- You'll Like It

I bought this on vinyl when it was released, wore it out, and always meant to replace it. It took many years, but I recently listened to the other live cd they made around the same time, and that hooked me. If you like most anything in Kooper's great catalog, you need this one, too. And the cd won't wear out.Buy it--you'll like it, maybe even love it.

Must Have

When I was 10 years old and joined the Columbia Record club my first "Selection of the Month" was Super Sessions. I returned it because I did not appreciate how good it was. Now I love it so I bought this album as well. Mike Bloomfield-gone too soon.

Old Blues, New Media

Having loved the studio Super Session album, I of course had to immediately run out and buy the vinyl of this live version back in 1968. Being at the time, a 19 year old college kid in love with the blues, the double album took most of my money ($6?). But forty years later, I still love this totally unpolished and raw performance beginning with Bloomfield's heavily impaired introduction to the dropping of his guitar at the end. This album is definitely not for everyone. If you're looking for Steely Dan production values, you'll hate it. But if you love raw, spontanious, live, 60's rock-blues that you can pull out your guitar and play along with, treat yourself to a rare moment in time when Johnson was in office and Woodstock was still 9 months away.Nowadays, compared to the double LP, the CD's seem pretty cheap!

No Problems all in order

My only gripe would be the time it took to arrive- which to be fair was as advertised- but surely in this day an age even if it is posted second class it should arrive within a few days.

good playing

It is nice to hear a pair of professionals who just start playing and instinctively know where to go next, I wish there were more like them on the go nowadays. thanks

groovy baby, this is where its at.

Got this on vinyl a million years ago but alas nothing to play it on, so reliving my younger days with this and other classics on CD. Great atmosphere with this live recording, and yes they really did speak like that back then.

This was a 'vinyl replacement' item so I already knew (and liked) the music. Great nostalgia.

Love You live

But the Show must go on!

Fillmre east

This captures what it was like in the music industry in the late 60's.This was a very spontaneous show and captured the essence of the late 60's.This show and recording captured the timeleness of music that was being played duringthe 1965 to 1972 era.A superb masterpiece by these players on this double cd.

Blues & a History Snapshot

This follow up to Super Session , done live, is a piece of music history. Not perfect, but fun and moving. Really worth having, if you like the blues, and "real" music.

Große Kunst .......

Beides große Musiker die es heute leider nicht mehr so viel gibt. Dieses Genre ist zeitlos und wird nicht durch Bla bla Musik abgelöst werdenwie manche meinen. Ich hoffe sie haben recht.
