A Most Unpleasant Title Story

Vonnegut has been one of the most stimulating reads of my life. I simply thrive on the ideas, politics, humour and humanity to be found in his 14 novels but the title work of this book of short stories is unpleasant. It features a gang rape that is not portrayed with opprobrium. Not prurient but also not necessary. It originally appeared in Playboy. If this had been the first piece by Vonnegut I'd read it might well have been the last; and what delights I would have missed. Treat as an aberration, avoid and read his other works.

Vintage Vonnegut

Haven't read Vonnegut for many years. To be honest it's a bit dated nowadays. But I enjoyed it all the same.

A very good collection

There are some great stories here. I'm afraid the ones included in the second half of the book are not as good, so overall it's not a perfect collection. But some of these stories are so good that they really make up for the weak ones. I strongly recommend it.

Disappointing

I only purchased this book because I saw a reference to one of the stories (Harrison Bergeron) which sounded intriguing. The story started promisingly but the resolution was flat and unimaginative. I thought the same about the rest of the tales, 'The Monkey House' I thought was plain silly. I have to admit, though, that I do not much care for short stories. The last half of the book was devoted to 'Palm Sunday', a sort of autobiography, which held no interest for me. This book will find its way to a charity shop.I can't see, from this offering, why Vonnegut is so popular, maybe the novels are better, on his own admission these stories were only pot-boilers while he produced the longer works.
