Well, it's Bubsy
I'm not surprised by the hysterical reviews this game was given. This game was essentially summoned by accident through memes, like when 13-year-old kids play with a Ouija Board and accidentally summon Baphomet. But to be honest, I thought the old 2D Bubsy games were OK and put 100% of the blame on Bubsy 3D for leaving the franchise to target of scorn. As far as, is this new game any good? It depends what you want out of it. If you looking for a nostalgic quick fix, it does the job. The controls are good, the graphics are a pleasant mix of modern HD with a retro vibe, and the level design is pretty good... At first. After a few levels, you realize that every level feels about the same. It definitely could have used more variety. But at least they didn't completely loose their mind and patch together wildly different play styles that should be in separate games, jammed into one poorly designed mess. SONIC! But before you can get too bored with it, it's over. Yes, it is a very short game. So if you looking for a game that will suck up many hours and provide content you can really sink your teeth into, this is NOT your game. Although if you want a "light snack" of retro platforming action, but you don't intend to dedicate a lot of time to reliving the 90's, this might be just what you're looking for. I had fun with it.

This Is Not The Bubsy Game You Were Born To Play
After years of being out of the spotlight Bubsy is back. This time the yarn-stealing aliens known as the Woolies have returned once again to steal the world's supply of yarn and Bubsy's Golden Fleece. So once again our hero sets off to recover his beloved Fleece, oh and stop the Woolies. Unfortunately Bubsy's return to the limelight is a little... lacking. After a brief cartoon still frame of the Woolies breaking into Bubsy's home and taking the Golden Fleece you're thrown onto an overworld map where you move Bubsy to a spot and begin the stage. At the end of each stage your total is tallied up and you're given a score including a "password" that doesn't particularly serve any purpose, as your progress is saved after every level completed. If you already know the stage's password you can unlock it I suppose but that's pretty much it.GAMEPLAYThere are roughly 3 objectives per stage:1.) Unlock the Woolie's Yarn Vault (Collect 5 keys found in the stage.)2.) Complete The Stage Without Dying3.) Collect All The ! T-Shirts (Amount varies per stage.)You go from stage-to-stage, collecting as many yarn balls as you can and try to keep up the multiplier. By collecting yarn balls fast enough you earn up to a 8X multiplier. A higher multiplier means more points earned per yarn ball collected. There is also a timer similar to the Sonic games that starts at 00:00 and slowly counts upwards from there. The faster you complete a level the better your score too. Remaining lives also add to your tally at the end so if you can avoid dying and collecting as many lives as you can find in the stage it helps.Bubsy can jump, glide, and pounce which throws him forward in an arc towards the direction he is facing. By using the pounce attack on crumbling walls you can bust through them and sometimes find secrets. Certain surfaces can also be climbed and clung to allowing Bubsy to move up or down. Pressing the opposite direction makes him let go. When gliding you can hold down the button to fall slower or let go to speed up. Combat is pretty simple, you can either pounce and attack an enemy or jump on top of them to defeat them. Bubsy's movements are pretty fluid and he controls quite well, until you use the pounce attack. Pouncing makes Bubsy lunge forward in an arc towards the direction he is facing but cannot be controlled so you may find yourself flying over an enemy and off a cliff. It seems like they were trying to imitate Sonic's Homing Attack but forgot to add in the homing feature. Fortunately unlike previous games Bubsy is impervious to fall damage (Which he will even comment on with his witty one-liners.) so you don't have to worry about falling from a high place and killing yourself should you miss. One problem however is if you go into a pounce attack you cannot switch to a glide and vice versa unless you happen to bounce off an enemy in the air.DIFFICULTYOne thing that Bubsy games were known for is being notoriously unforgiving. Bubsy: The Woolies Strikes Back doesn't follow the tradition. Lives and checkpoints are plentiful. Die and you immediately spawn back at the nearest checkpoint you passed. Bubsy can be killed by one hit however if you pick up a black ! t-shirt it gives you one extra hit and any shirts after that turn into an extra life. If you happen to get hit then they revert back to the black shirts until you collect one again. Enemies with the exception of some (Like bees.) don't really outright attack Bubsy, the Woolies either wander back and forth or fly on a predetermined path simply acting as stepping stones for Bubsy to reach higher places. The biggest danger is just pressing the pounce button when you meant to jump and killing yourself in the process. Lives don't carry over between stages so even if you amass a bunch or lose nearly all your lives then finish the stage you always start out on the next one with 9 which makes collecting lives pointless unless you're trying to collect all the shirts for the objective. Once you do, don't bother trying after.GRAPHICSBubsy's stages do have some colorful graphics but they look like something on par with what you may find on the Nintendo Wii U. Bubsy's design is fairly simplified and his model does appear as one whole piece (No lines on his limbs in other words.) but it lacks any real detail. The stages themselves have spots where you can see slight flickering and gaps between the objects and some "dividers" are one long thin piece that extend all the way up to the top of the screen. Enemies lack variety with only a couple differences in colors for the Woolies and the yarn balls appear as 2D glowing sprites. Furthermore the unique deaths from the past Bubsy games are completely gone. Depending on how Bubsy died in the previous 2D games he might fall over and see stars, melt into a puddle of goo, slowly sink into the water counting down, or flatten down accordion style. Here, if Bubsy is hit he is thrown into the air and spins around uncontrollably. Falling in water just causes him to poof out of existence. Lose all your lives and he's thrown at your screen crashing into it. For a game made in 2017 and meant to be his big "comeback" the graphics certainly feel basic like it was given to a couple college students to complete in a programming class. They're not bad and fairly decent, but I've seen indie titles for less with more impressive graphics.SOUND AND MUSICI was hoping there would be an updated theme harkening back to Bubsy's very first title screen but no such luck. The music is catchy and upbeat with a variety of instruments with a "midi" feel. Yarn balls have the classic "pop" sound when Bubsy collects them and enemies a thump when squished. During the game Bubsy will make several one-liner comments depending on what he's doing at that moment, such as when he defeats a Wooly, collects a yarn ball, glides, collects a t-shirt, or pounces. Doing multiple pounces in succession may also trigger him to build up on the "emphasis".Double pounce! Triple pounce! ULTRA POUNCE!To some players this could be annoying as his remarks are severely limited to only a few different phrases so he may continually comment on how he doesn't know how he glides every time you do. This can be changed in the options menu to suit your tastes ranging from "Silent Bobcat" where he won't say a word to "Bubsy" where he will incessantly chatter with almost every action.PURRFECT EDITION EXTRASNow if you're reading this then you probably are thinking of or plan to buy the limited edition. With it comes the game, a postcard signed by Bubsy, a disc containing the entire game soundtrack, and Bubsy's business card. Starting with the post card on one side is Bubsy standing in an Indiana Jones-esque outfit inside a temple. On the other side is just a message from the bobcat himself talking about the "Indiana Bobcat" movie he is currently shooting and him thanking you for buying his game before saying it makes a perfect gift for all your family. The usual stuff Bubsy is known for really. The business card has Bubsy's face on one side then a picture of him in a suit with his social media handles on the other. In case you're wondering that's:Twitter: Bubsythe_BobcatInstagram: Bubsy_theBobcatFacebook: TherealBubsyLinkedIn: Bubsy The BobcatFunny enough each of these are real handles the developers made for their mascot Bubsy so it's kind of interesting. The music CD comes with 22 tracks, ranging about 56 minutes worth of music.VERDICTBubsy: The Woolies Strike Back is a pretty good and solid game in the Bubsy franchise and one I would recommend only with one large caveat, don't buy the PS4 version unless you don't have a good computer. At the time of writing this you (Until November 7th, 2017.) can get the Windows version through Accolade's special launch sale for about half the price of the "Limited Edition" and get the game soundtrack for free through Steam or GOG. The system requirements are fairly low too supporting Windows XP and an Intel Core 2 Duo as the bare minimum so just about any PC in the last 10 years should be capable of playing it. But if you must get the PS4 version I would wait until a price drop or sale. The game is terribly short so it's not quite worth the $29.99 asked for the base game, and $39.99 for a post card and business card aren't worth it unless you're a diehard Bubsy fan. The soundtrack is being given away free with the game right now (Again until 11/7/17.) so you really aren't paying $10 extra bucks for that.EDIT 11/2/17 - As to not confuse, despite my score of 3/5 I really did enjoy the game and very much recommend given if you can get it on a discount then definitely snag it. I'm hoping Accolade does make another one starring Bubsy but one worthy of this snarky Bobcat. This one doesn't quite do him justice.

Purrfect Revival
After what seems like decades without anew entry in the series Bubsy the Bobcat is back in action. I think I speak for everyone when I say that this is one game franchise that deserved to be brought back. With tight controls that emphasize pinpoint accuracy, which takes skill to hone, and Bubsy's clever quips, this franchise has been born anew. As an added bonus there is now no fall damage. This is a game that anyone can enjoy, be it veteran gamers or people new on the scene. This is a game that everyone should play if they have the opportunity.

90s Bubsy Nostalgia is not Woolies Strike Back...
Doesn't even compare at all, aside from using the same mascot. This physical release is obviously just to get in the craze of releasing it on a physical format, otherwise this looks and feel like a digital title. Comes in a standard PS4 case with a a few extras:PostcardBusiness CardSoundtrack CDBlu Ray Game discPretty tame with the extras, though this did release at $39.99. The platforming segments are frustrating and not that precise. I already got bored within the first stage (played the first 2 stages through completion). There is a collecting aspect where you can collect yarn balls in levels (they look like cereal).Bottom line: I wouldn't pay more than $10 for this game. Would have been better as a digital only title on the PS3, or even on the Switch.

Bubsy is back for a new generation!
It's great to see Bubsy back after all these years. For people who didn't already like Bubsy to begin with, this game isn't going to change their minds, but if you grew up with the original 16-bit Bubsy games like I did, I would say that this is worth checking out. This is probably the best Bubsy game to come out, which isn't saying too much as the bar hasn't been set too high for that, but I enjoyed playing it. The only real issue with this game is that it's way too short. If you want a fun, simple platformer, you could do a lot worse.

Bubsy: The Woolies strike back (PS4)
