GRE Reading Comprehension & Essays (Manhattan Prep GRE Strategy Guides)

I paid $1,000 for GRE a prep course from a reputable company and this book gave me more detail on the analytic writing section than the course did! I got a 6/6 on the AW section using this book’s strategies. The argument essay section is particularly good. Would highly recommend!

I needed access for the online prep exams, and buying this totally worked. Saved me about 15 bucks over paying for the practice exams directly on their website. BTW, just took one of their tests and it is very good, very similar to the PowerPrep put out by ETS, though I doubt these are adaptive like the official ones seem to be.

This book helped me get a feel for how I should be approaching reading comprehension questions and the essay section and I ended up getting a 168 on the Verbal section and a 6 on my essays on the actual exam. I highly recommend you read this before you start studying for the GRE.

I can't praise these books enough! Can I give a 6th star? They are so easy to read and the techniques are very easy to pick up and use. I bought three of the Manhattan Prep books in preparation for the GRE, but I primarily used this one because I struggled the most with verbal passages. In fact, I struggled a fair amount with the English section in general, but with the use of this book and a couple other resources (GRE Vocab Capacity, Manhattan Prep Advanced Words Flashcards), I got in the 80th percentile on the GRE Verbal section. These books had the right strategies for me, and I highly recommend them to boost your GRE score. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I didn't know about the GRE until the summer I needed to take it. I used the books from this set, magoosh's online program, and Khan Academy to study for it for a few weeks, just went through the material until I felt I had a basic handle, skipped anything I really didn't seem to understand well (since I was short on time) and focused on really getting what I could. Got a 162 on quant and 165 on verbal. I had some other GRE books I tried first, and these are just far and above better. I would suggest them to anyone.

With the GRE selections being presented only on a screen, this volume very effectively guides you to break down passages and quickly address the questions. I only took the GRE once. The tips in this book helped me get a 166 on the verbal section. I highly recommend this.

If you think you're going to get some sort of novel strategy for acing the reading comprehension sections, think again. It's very common-sensical stuff any vaguely intelligent person could work out. Manhattan Prep doesn't have a "gimmick" for this like Princeton Review's "plugging in" strategy in the Quantitative Reasoning section. You are better off taking a speed-reading course, and in fact Manhattan Prep would do better to devise one in book form. This is mostly a waste. Unfortunately it's one of the only books out there that specifically focuses on reading comprehension, so if it's part of a package deal where you get it free with one of the other books, you might as well buy it.

It was a shame that the NEW strategy guide did not contain a Manhattan Prep online access code on the inside back cover.

not many questions not worth at all

Very very useful, especially because I found these 2 to be the most difficult parts of the GRE! The essay advice in particular was very useful, as it teaches you what ETS expects to see from an essay and provides sample essays that have been given a score of 6, as well as quotes and words that would be useful to include in your essay!

The only reason I am giving this book 4 stars is because you get 5 Online Practice Tests for free.On the other hand if you ask me about the content, I can't be sure.I mean there are some cool strategies to answer the RC's. But then again the practice questions in each chapter are of the basic level. The practice questions are not that hard to match the actual GRE level.The free online tests that you get with it are good in fact I must say they are exactly what you expect in the GRE or may even be harder.These tests are worth, they will provide you your score analysis and help you to become compatible to the GRE online format (which is very important).Finally you should give it a try only to check out the 5 Free Practice Tests, otherwise I didn't find the chapters that helpful apart from few strategies.
