Gripping and full of promise

A great new series awaits if the follow ups carry on in the same vein. Gripping, gritty and great characters

New and interesting

This is a new, interesting take on a crime thriller, one of the protagonists being a police negotiator. I enjoyed it, but couldn't give 5 stars because I couldn't quite believe that the mother of a child hostage seemed to spend most of her time thinking erotic thoughts about the male D. I. she was working with. As a mum, there'd be no room in my mind for fantasising about anyone, I'd be too scared and focused on the safety of my child. I found myself thinking *typical, you can tell it's written by a man", and then feeling annoyed about the distraction. Reading, for me, is about being totally immersed in a story. I did enjoy the snippets of Welsh history, and as I lived in Wales for 25 years, with my job taking me up to Bangor University, it was lovely recapturing the sights and sounds of the region. I did settle in to the story, and feel sure that the main characters will become more "fleshed out" as the author has written some great thrillers, and I love the other series set in North Wales. The ending of this, the first in a new series, cleverly leaves you with some tantalising clues about the direction we're being led along, so I'm excited and looking forward to the journey.

Cracker!

As a fan of Simon McCleave having read all his previous books this was a great start to a new series. The opening was good, switching from past to present setting the scene for an interesting novel. Believable characters and story. My only gripe being a retired primary teacher I've yet to meet any teacher who graduated aged 20 and LEA would Never allow 20 year 6 pupils on any trip out of school with only 1 adult for supervision. My goodness a BOAT trip think of the Risk Assessments to be completed! That gripe over I enjoyed Laura's strong character and found it endearing she still talked to Sam her late husband and has possibly found love again after 3 years a widow. Great cliff hanger and looking forward to book 2, thank you Simon

Promising start of a new series

I have really enjoyed Simon McCleave's other books and this one, the first in a new series, didn't disappoint. As usual, he creates and developes interesting and likeable characters. The plot is fast moving and gripping although there were a couple of instances where the timings and credibility was stretched a bit too far - I can't imagine a group travelling several hundred metres across rough terrain on foot in less time than it takes a speeding boat to travel five hundred metres.I enjoy the snippits of Welsh mythology and history and, as ever, the author makes me want to revisit Wales from his descriptions of the beautiful scenery. As with his other series there is a background mystery gradually developing and hopefully this will become clearer as the series progresses.

A fantastic start to a new series

Wow, what an absolutely fantastic book. I have read the first series Simon McCleave wrote with DI Ruth Hunter and rated the whole series highly. So, when I saw he had a new series out based in my home town I jumped at the chance to review on Netgalley. What can I say, I could not put this book down, people say this a lot but with this book I mean I was reading it every chance I got, while drying my hair, cooking tea, walking the dog! Everywhere!! I was so fast paced, gripping, heart wrenchingThroughout the book there are references to the area and local facts which I found fascinating and enjoyed once again seeing Welsh words in Simon's books. I love that he's bringing people's attention to our beautiful part of the world. His historical facts and knowledge of local areas and events has been very well researched, and there were I good few things I didn't know! All in all this is a suberb book which has set the scene for what looks like a fantastic series to come.I'm only sad that I have come to the end!!!!
