'Goodbye to All That' by Jeffrey Goldberg tells us 9/11 was motivated by Islamism's 'sense of ideological supremacy, by its loathing of modernity, and also by revulsion at American presence on the Arabian peninsula.' No mention of our support for Israel, per Osama bin Laden himself! An obvious sign of the author's extreme bias. Goldberg argues for continued strong U.S. involvement, despite the terrible price we've paid for having done so to-date.'India's Poor Starve as Politicians Steal Their Food' reports that about 900 million Indians eat less than government-recommended minimums, with 20% of adults and half of children under five suffering from malnourishment. An estimated $14.5 billion worth of government-subsidized food has disappeared in the last decade, and nobody has been punished.'Debt for Life' reports that U.S. has over 100,000 janitors with college degrees, and 16,000 degree-holding parking-lot attendants. The article waffles between alleging 'college pays,' listing ways costs could be reduced, the pernicious influence of easily obtained government loans, and silly majors, ending up unable to conclude anything substantive.'The Debt-Free Degree' reports on Davidson College's eliminating loans, assisting students instead with endowment funds - a strategy not sustainable given its $90.5 million endowment size vs. 1,900 students.
