I am not a heavy metal fan. But, this is musically much more musically sophisticated and interesting than that.It rewards repeated listening.

Awesome Album!

My fiance and I were at the record shop last week when she picked this out for me out of the used bin because of it's bleak art motif she thought it might be something up my alley given my love of all types of black metal. That said she couldn't have been more right and this is NOT black metal. In fact putting a genre stamp on this is very difficult. Though not really "METAL," the influence of metal is unmistakable. One person drew a parallel to Isis, which I feel that but with it's bleak and spacey feel coupled with moments of buzzing jagged riffs and drums that are both thundering and winding this feels much closer to the realm of ambient black metal. Influence on this album can be felt from the likes of Weakling, Leviathan, Wolves in the Throne Room, In the Woods, and yes Isis, Pelican, and even Agalloch, Opeth, and Tool, in fact I dare say these guys are even Death Spell Omega fans. Though it's lack of any metal vocals (save a scream or two) (all vocals are female) lend this a lot of accessibility it would not otherwise have. Like much of the music from the afformentioned bands Wyllt's music is heavy without being "heavy." The important part is that this album, this band, are awesome! As mentioned it is bleak and spacey yet highly dynamic. Much like the other bands mentioned above it is the drums that really help to drive move and bring together all of the atmosphere and riffing. Short story, this is a sick piece of black metal influenced moody ambient music. I would recommend this to pretty much anyone especially anyone who likes the bands above.

Tee-Pee records hits us with another gem. "Wyllt" is solid debut for Black Math Horseman. Imagine if you will what would happen if Isis were fronted by a woman with a voice equal parts sexy and sinister, but the engineer on the record had the good sense to drench the vocals in reverb and bury them in the mix. Of course, this only scratches the surface. The loud-soft dynamic one expects to find in "post-metal," as people have taken to calling it, is used more effectively than many of their contemporaries. They are able to hit on both extremes of the spectrum, from the sublimely psychedelic to the punishingly heavy and crescendos/decrescendos at all points in between. And most refreshingly, their dynamic swells don't always lead to over-the-top heaviness. They also know when to back off. Their sense of space is extremely mature, especially considering that this is their debut.In short, Black Math Horseman have managed to throw some new tricks into the playbook of a genre that hasn't been producing many new tricks lately.

2018, and I am still jamming to this. I just had to put in my two cents. Since I just saw this on here

I put off buying this for several months after first previewing it, and really wish that I hadn't.The songs are all haunting, dynamic, and compelling. I was originally worried that this would be one of those albums that we all come across from time to time(especially in this genre) where there are 3 interesting songs, and the rest are a boring, sleep-inducing drone. Not the case here. This one is a great listen from start to finish, and a real gem.

Perhaps not for everyone but if you are bored of hearing the same things all the time then this might be for you. I'm inclined to echo many of the US site reviews, this album is dark and atmospheric. It can be heavy and it has a sense of when to tone things back, I also really like the female vocals and the lack of cookie monster. Likely to appeal to fans of things like ISIS, Pelican, Opeth and Tool, but although there are parallels this doesn't really sound like any of those. If you heave heard some tracks and liked them then I can assure you the rest of the album holds up equally well, if you haven't then this album is awesome in many respects but worth trying to hear a sample or something just to check it is what you are looking for. I think there is a fair chance this will be a love/hate thing for quite a lot of people.

The musical side of the band is amazing, the vocals however ruined it for me not the worst but the band would be total with valid vocals on this musically sweet album
