a great collection of cartoons

This is an excellent collection of Daffy Duck cartoons from the Leon Schlesinger Studios, scored by Carl Stalling, and with the many voices of Mel Blanc. There are also four Noveltoons, two that are terrific, but a warning must be given to those who get offended by the politically incorrect, because these episodes do not conform to today's standards. The most fascinating episode for me is "Daffy the Commando", which is dark and brilliant, and absolutely hilarious, featuring Daffy in Nazi territory. It curiously has a glimpse of a wall poster depicting graphic female frontal nudity, that is shocking by its place in a cartoon for children, if that is who the main audience was supposed to be for this piece.Episode list:1: "Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur" (1939), directed by Chuck Jones, animated by A.C. Gamer.Casper the caveman and his pet dinosaur Fido hunt for a duck breakfast. This one is laugh-out-loud funny.2: "Yankee Doodle Daffy", (1943), directed by Friz Freleng, animated by Richard Bickenbach.Producer Porky Pig is forced to watch Daffy's repertoire, which includes "I'm Just Wild About Harry", a banjo solo, and an imitation of Carmen Miranda singing "Boom-Chicky-Boom". You get to hear the full spectrum of Mel Blanc's amazing talent in this episode.3: "Daffy the Commando" (1943), directed by Friz Freleng, animated by Ken Champin.Fantastic and funny, this anti-Nazi piece is brilliant. It features Von Vulture as the bad guy, and the image of Hitler was done in Rotoscope.4: "To Duck or Not to Duck" (1943), directed by Chuck Jones, animated by Robert Cannon.Includes a boxing match between Daffy and Elmer Fudd.5: "The Mite" (1948), directed by Bill Tytla, animated by Steve Muffatti & George Germanetti for the Famous Studios.Features Tom Thumb who says "I may be little, but I'm going to do big things", and runs away from home and joins the circus.6: "Foney Fables" (1942), directed by Friz Freleng, animated by Richard Bickenbach. This is "A Book of Fairy Tales", and takes a humorous look at characters like Tom Thumb (who is now huge by taking Vitamin B-1), Jack and the Beanstalk, and more. There is a reference to WWII with the duck that lays golden eggs, who now lays them in aluminum, for the Aluminum National Defense fund.7: "Suddenly it's Spring" (1944), directed by Seymour Kneitel, animated by Orestes Calpini and Otto Feuer for the Famous Studios.Features Raggedy Ann (the 1st of only 2 Noveltoons featuring her), and it is beautifully drawn and very expressive, as Raggedy Ann travels through the sky and talks to the elements. The blues singing Mr. Cloud is not politically correct, but wonderful, and this Noveltoon has a very real emotional quality to it.8: "Have You Got Any Castles" (1939), directed by Frank Tashlin, animated by Ken Harris, and # 2 in Tashlin's "Book Trilogy".This is a song and dance fest ! Many musical treats including the Johnny Mercer/Richard Whiting title song, and the Harold Arlen/E.Y. Harburg "You're the Cure for What Ails me".

daffy, my hero

The cartoons on this DVD are old but they're great. However, just wanted to let folks know that the cartoons on this DVD (Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur) are the exact same cartoons that are on Cartoon Craze's, "Daffy Duck: To Duck or Not to Duck". So don't order two of the same thing, like I did.

Whitewashed History.

Whenever I stumble across a collection of DVDs priced at $1 a piece, I'm interested. It's not because of the frugal nature inherent in the peasant culture I come from. It's due to the fact that these things are usually fraught with the real grit of pop culture which time (and market forces) inevitably scrubs out. In other words, our inaccurate view of the past through rose-colored glasses can be penetrated by viewing these lost snapshots of society. Here's a great example that I found buried toward the end of a $1 DVD titled, "Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur." Actually, everything on this DVD is a good instance, each cartoon short including something which many today would find politically objectionable. Mostly involving race or unsavory attitudes about WWII, and during WWII.It's easy to see how these discount collections come to be. Some startup production company (in this case 'Digiview Productions') has bought the rights to some shorts which Warner Brothers (and others) have ostensibly deemed financially obsolete. Most likely for pennies. Either that or the toons themselves have by now been encorporated in public domain, and therefore free. Then they package them as a normal Looney Toones collection. It doesn't take long in viewing these to see that they are from the bottom of the barrel. One is taken aback by the inclusion of a stuttering "yes-massah" black child character in a Warner short. It does offend. But the tradeoff is worth it. This is the stuff which disappears from history, leaving us an incomplete picture of our own culture, circa the time period. If you see these, your idea of race relations in 1944 will be jarred, but in a valuable way. It's a bit uncomfortable to see this degree of commonly acceptable racism in this culture, a culture of which I myself am a product. That aside, I found one of these shorts particularly interesting, one entitled, "Suddenly it's Spring," which is part Wizard of Oz, part Betty Boop. Oz because it follows the same template of a child resolving a real-life problem through a dream journey. Here the ill child dreams that her doll embarks on a magical quest to save her life, and wakes up miraculously cured. And Betty Boop because of the dark under-worldish racially-tinged cosmology. But again, included is a character, a lazy old black man, who is depicted in all his stereotypical glory. There is no demographic for this stuff nowadays, aside from the culturally curious, and as a result the company which released this had to market it dishonestly, giving no hint of the DVD's real contents. If we cared about history we would show one of these alongside every "What's Opera, Doc?" or "Duck Amuck." Shame. On so many levels.
