Q: What size holes do I need to drill for the buttons and joystick? In inches or fractions please.

I used a 1 1/8" spade bit for the large buttons & a 7/8" spade bit for the smaller buttons & hole for the joystick. I guess a 30mm & a 24mm step drill respectively would work if you are only drilling through a thin panel.

Q: Can the Joystick be set to 4-way only? I see a picture indicating it can be changed from 8 to 4-way however this is not listed in the description.

Yes. There is a plastic piece that you take off, rotate, and put back on. The first time you take it off, it is very stiff and difficult.

Q: How do you suggest we protect the usb encoder board? does it need to be placed inside an enclosure?

Most people do put all this into an enclosure. If you search for arcade controllers you can see where it’s placed inside the arcade box with other stuff like a raspberry pi for example.
